Working On Our Posture

On Sunday morning, the Church was called to stand. And not just stand, but stand boldly. Messages like this are vital, for believers who take a stand continually face the pull of the world, the flesh, and the devil. We may not even realize the areas where we are no longer standing until we see ourselves in the mirror of God’s Word. It is natural to “slouch”, to give in to the weight and conform to what is most comfortable.
Poor posture, both physically and spiritually, doesn’t usually appear overnight. Poor posture is often caused by the daily wear and tear of our own habits. Carrying bags on one shoulder, crossing the same leg and leaning to the same side, slouching forward to look at a phone screen… Small decisions that can compound into much bigger issues.
It’s easy to stand on Sunday night. But what is the first thing our hands reach for on Monday morning? What fills our minds first- God’s Word or all the news that happened while we slept? We may stand firm on Wednesday night, but what is it that weakens our stand on Thursday? Is there gossip that we entertain or worldliness that we are entertained by? It may seem small, but give it time and it will weigh down your stand.
Working on your posture is intentional. It requires paying attention to what is normal, mundane even, and calling ourselves out. We must take an honest look at the one in the mirror.
If the Church is going to stand, let’s do it right. No compromise here or bending there. No slacking through the week just to straighten up on Sundays.
The habits that we build are our strongest allies or our deadliest enemies. Let’s take careful inventory this week of where we are being gradually pulled down. If there ever was a time for the church to straighten up, it’s now.
